I am interested in converting my '72 164E to electronic ignition. The Pertronix catalog doesn't specifically mention the 164, but there are other 6 cylinder Bosch distributors listed. Do they, or anyone else, make a kit to convert the points over to an electronic setup?

I have the Crane unit in my 72 164. Got it from JC whitney. It came with 6 or 7 different chopper wheels so the unit can be used on 4,6 or 8 cylinder engines. For the 164, choose the wheel with six slots which will fit snugly on the distributor shaft. Its been in there now about 20K miles; no problem. I guess my only question about it is.......whats the expected life of the LED, or whatever creates the light.

I got a beater 122 last year that had a Crane unit. The Crane failed a couple weeks after I got the car. There was a receipt for the unit dated 1982 in the door pocket. 22 years, not too shabby.
Currently running the 1975 ign system. 30 years and going, not too shabby.

What you really want is the ignition system for a 75 164E. It is the same
system used on the 75 240, but with a 6 cylinder distributor that also contains
the points for fuel injection triggering in the bottom of the distributor.
The module and most of the other wiring are the same as, or equivalent to the
wiring used in the early 240s. This is a bolt-in, very good electronic
ignition system that appears completely stock and works great.

I was thinking about this recently. Went and looked for applications but was unable to find one. I prefer pertronix over crane optical triggers and would definitely use an ignitor in my 74.

Try giving pertronix a call. Interested to see what you find.
