tie rod end madness 120-130

I took my 1963 122 to a front end shop to have them install new tie rod ends.

The previous owner gave me a set of genuine Volvo ends made in Germany with the number 022 0002 914 009 imprinted in the black rubber portion.

The guys screwed the ends on just fine. But when they tried to attach the idler, the shaft/bolt coming vertical from the end was too thick.

Weren't all tie rods the same for 122? Could these ends be for some other model? Anybody have a moment to check a parts list?

What you got hold of is tie rods for the late 140/160 models.

All 120's and early 140's ran the same tie rod but the 1973 model 140 and forward got a "thicker" bolt.

You will find some threads in the 140-160 section regarding interchangeability (did I get that right??) of early and late front ends in the 140 series.

probably fits some volvo somewhere. My parts manual, shows 2 different sets of parts # for the tie rod ends, but there are no notes on them, which suggestst they are interchangeable. there are however either a metric 14 X 1.5 or 5/8 - 18 UNF thread, that sounds interchangeable re a tapered shaft. So the PO had the wrong parts, that is why they are PO cause the leave you PO ed on occasion. BTW I didn't get into part #s as my manual in original volvo and doesn't have the new cross refrernce # in it, but your part # sounds very modern, as well as potentially just the # for the dust boot as in my manual the boot has it,s own part #. Good luck with that.

Here is a photo of the tie rod end that has a bolt that is too thick.

The bolt is 1 mm in diameter.

If they don't fit you must have been given the wrong parts. My reference (from Europe) shows only one style of tie rod end with a threaded connection. The Volvo part numbers are 658431 for the left side and 658432 for the right side. The rubber casing is 670877, superceding 660007. These parts, according to another reference were used from 1950 on the PV as well and the same part used on the 1800 until 1973. The 140 used a similar part, but it has a different part number, possibly that's what you have. You said these were Volvo parts - isn't their number on the bag or box?
