240 lost power! 200 1990

Out of the blue, my NA brick doesn't have any 'juice' (power) any more, not that it had much before. I noticed a change in the exhaust sound, seemed deeper, so I pulled of the catalytic convertor (thinking it was clogged) and went for a test drive. Although it was much louder, no noticable change in power. Going up a steep hill, which I used to be able to take in 2nd with a bit of pull left over, now it's a struggle to make it up in 1st gear at 3k rpms. I didn't notice any missing, feels like something just isn't right.

Any thoughts would be very helpful,

Thanks.

Matt

Another vote for timing belt, but if that turns out not to be the problem, the only other thing I know that will make an engine loose power AND sound deeper is retarded ignition timing.

If the engine sounds like it is pulling hard, but it isn't, you may have lost ignition timing advance.

Yep, mine did this too- same symptoms. I pulled off the timing belt cover and found that the belt had slipped one tooth. I also discovered the front part of the belt had some rubber shredded off, so it must have moved forward a bit at some point.
Changed the belt and everything was good again.

I'll second checking the timing belt.. but there is something else. Small 4 cylinder engines, such as the Volvo Red Block engines, depend on back pressure from the exhaust to "tune" their torque curve and get more power at lower revs. Check for exhaust leaks throughout the system as well as the engine timing and timing belt. Good luck!
