Diesel Conversion 700 1987

I am interested in retrofitting my 740GLE wagon with a diesel engine. As I understand it, the Volvo diesel is actually a VW engine with an additional 2 cylenders. Is the bolt pattern the same on the VW engines and the Volvo Diesel engine? It seems to me that I could get a reasonably good price on the plentiful VW engine vs. a rarer Volvo diesel engine.

Drive a VW diesl with a 1000lb load to se how your conversion would perform.

The two motors are in the same family, but bolt up quite differently.

If you are going to do all that work, use a Mercedes engine which is plentiful and will at least run for a long time when you are done.
