front end bushings 140-160

Anyone know if the upper control arm bushings for a 1974 164 are the same as the ones used in the 140 cars?

In general I am in the dark on how the 164 suspension differs from the the 140.

Volvo part is $55 per bushing! Trying to see if poly bushings for the 140 will work on my 164, this would actually come out cheaper. Looking at GCP's website is not helping.

Thanks,
steve

(fixed a typo in the url)

I don't have pictures of 140 bushings handy but I do
have these for a 164.

The parts:
upper a-arm bushing:

lower a-arm bushing:

Sorry I don't have a scale for these in the picture.

I may even have my old bushings sitting around in a box somewhere; the
shop that did the front end work said that some of the bushings didn't
need to be replaced. I suspected that they just didn't want to do the
work but the car rode okay after their work so maybe. I'd take it back
to the same shop so I'm clearly not that upset that they didn't use all
my parts...

Thanks for the pictures, chris.

I'm having jparker send me the poly bushings and I will take stock once I have everything apart. If they work I will return the stock uppers. I'll post back with an outcome, regardless.

I'm also going to fit some progressive springs up front. I have a stock front swaybar. Will be interesting to check out resulting ride height and see how much the progressives counter body roll. I have 140 overload springs in the rear and they fit perfect and have helped tremendously. The car corners on the door handles and I've been too cheap to upgrade the swaybars so any little bit helps.

These volvos are hungry mouths around the house. Always competing for the unclaimed parts of my paychecks...

I am pretty sure the 164 bushings are different from 140 but I am not sure
if the mountings are the same. If you have a dealer handy that has both in
stock it might be educational to compare them.

With lots of time and effort I've managed to download the pre-73 144 catalogue off GCP. It's handy having it available without going on-line. Will be doing the same for the 164 once I get time. But that's the way to go. In general GCP is expensive, but have a look at www.scandcar.com who has always helped me with good prices.

I'll order the volvo bushings and the poly ones. Compare and install. I'll report back the results.

Thanks,
steve

Steve, they are not the same.

140 uses #675432 at all four locations.

164 uses #679247 at the two front locations, and #679248 at the two rear.

what is the difference in these bushings? all 140 and 160 upper control arms i have seen all looked to be identacal.

the poly bushing i have gotten for my 140's are not identacal to the stock ones but work perfectly. on example is that the lower bushing both press in from the out side. ,unlike stock wich both press in from the front.

if it is a case of monting . if the 140 bushings have the same i.d., o.d. and lengt as the 160 i don't see why they cannot be used.

I don't know what the difference is -- just going by the parts listing.

I'd have to guess it's just a different firmness, possibly softer on the 160 to give a smoother, quieter ride?

Just a guess, though.

Thanks for looking that up, Phil. I need to get my own literature so I quit bugging everyone. You and Walrus are enablers, making me lazy. :)

I'll go ahead and pony up the dollars for the correct volvo parts.
