Several years ago, I was where you're at, with an older 240. It was one of the worst experiences of my life, working on the trans. I did clean the filter, but it never needed cleaning. There was nothing significant in it and I broke off bolts that held the pan on in the process. I had to retap about 6 of the bolts that were fused to the aluminum body. My advice, DON'T TOUCH IT. And there is a very simple way to change your transmission fluid. Buy about 20 qrts, of the correct fluid (which I think is Dextran III), disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator where they go in and out. Put some rubber hose on each one and lead them to a bucket. Start the car and see which one pumps the fluid out. Connect the other one( that does not pump the fluid)back up to it's orginal location and leave the one that is pumping the fluid continue to do so. While you add new fluid to the transmission filler pipe. Continue to do this until the color of the transmission fluid changes from the dark color that it may be to the new bright red color of the new fluid.
When you're done, reconnect the one line that you used to pump the fluid out. Drive the car and check the level of the transmission fluid. Fill it to the proper level for a hot transmission since you have driven it and warmed it up.
