I love my 164. Runs on LPG and costs 10 cents a mile. Gasoline costs $4.40 a gallon here so that's equivalent to getting 44 MPG on gasoline. We're lucky in Sydney as LPG is widely used commercially so most service stations have it. I converted it from auto to M400 and now she flies.

I had a 75 164E for almost 20 years. The mileage was good especially on the road. I easily got 24 plus depending on how fast I drove. I did have a 4sp OD and that certainly help with the mileage. Never had to do anything with the engine other that change a water pump a couple of times and put in a couple of clutches.

The seats aren't very good, at least for me because I wound up setting too low. I put in some nice leather seats from a 240 (bolt in) and found that I was sitting much higher and more comfortable.

The seat height is adjustable, was that with the seats in their highest setting? That being said, the 240 seats are even higher in the same mounting settings...

The 240 seats are about twice as thick as the original 164 seats. You sit farther from the floor. The 164 also came with front and back height adjusters. And in 1975 came with a heated seat for the driver only.

Most of the body parts can come from 240's. Some of the brake componants came from the 140's. You will probably not find any 164's in the junk yards unless you go to the other coast. They all rusted away in the upper midwest.

I bought a new 72 164E in Texas the spring of 1972 (trading a 68 122S - I regret!), and managed 25 mpg using the 4 speed/overdrive when relocating to AZ.

I still use it as a daily driver, with 380 Kmiles on the odometer. I rebuilt the engine prematurely at 140 Kmiles due to famously common valvetrain (cam/lifter) wear, and have motored happily with the rebuild for the last 20 years, with a camshaft/IPD lifter replacement about 10 years ago - what I needed instead of the full rebuild the first time around. Even with the OD not working, it manages 20 mpg if not thrashed.

George Downs (Walrus) is another of the 164 practitioners on the board. I read everything he posts. I'll probably be buried in that car!

LOUSY on gas is correct.
