what holds the bottom trim on my 240 and can I reattach it? 200 1989

Brickers,

I am wondering what holds the botton trim on my 1990 Volvo 240. the trim I am talking about is about 3" wide and it goes across the bottom of my doors and continues onto the fenders.

Mine is coming off and I'm not sure if I can reattach it. I can pull it off enough to see what looks like a spot where a clip used to be but it does not look like the clip can be replaced.

On a front fender I replaced, the trim seemed to be glued on.

Does anyone know how the trim is attached and how it can be reattached once it comes loose? Please advise. Thank you.

I put mine back on with 3M double side tape.Glad to see that you left the slot open for the water drain and dirt.Clean the body sides with window cleaner before installing.

Not really a clip...just a locator pin. Double sided tape is how it was applied at the factory.

      Hi Art,
As you know, those little nubs usually break off when you remove the trim from JY car. I recently got a couple and was surprised that one "locator" came out intact.

I was even more surprised when I saw it had a little "one-way-barb" on each side, which should have locked the strip to the door — so in that sense they are clips.

I can see the need for the locators when applying the strips to the car, and can only guess that the locking "barbs" are there to retain the strip if/when the tape lets go, as it sometimes does.

I had a spare tucked away between the floor joists. Sure enough, you are right, if I put on my specs I can see two tiny barbs on that "locator pin". My recollection of the hole in the body is too large for them to be effective without one of those nylon sockets, but I'm also pretty sure I've never seen any of those in use under this door trim. Wasn't one of the body holes a bit slotted?

I think those barbs have some holding power, as the studs usually break off on me. But I think the rear hole is slotted, as you say - vertically I believe. That may be why I have an intact rear locator: I may have rotated the strip 90° in removing it (after breaking off the front stud).

Bottom line (pun intended) is that I always manage to stick the strips on crooked, and blame it in the lack of intact, erect nubbins to guide me.

      Hello Art:

I have a question I am hoping you can help me with regarding accessory bushing orientation-- could you have a look at my post? I seem to recall that you have a '91 which should have the same power steering pump as my '92...

      The post is:

          Good evening, Art!

Thank you very much for looking into those pump mount bushings for me! As I suspected, I put the back one in wrong... Oh well, at least if I fix it right away they won't be hard to take apart! There should be an archive devoted to your digital photography!

I did manage to get both motor mounts and the transmission mount in today and a fresh fill with Mobil 1, though...

          Thanks again!

PS pump bushing assembly 200 1991

        Hi Herb,

Number 4 daughter said she might stop by today with her '91. You are right, it has the integral tank version, different than the '89s I have around here to look at.

I'll get a look at it if/when it arrives and let you know in case you don't get another response.

Don't know how it was originally held on, but on my cars, it is now held on by Pit Crew's Choice adhesive.

on 85 models there's a wide slot on the back side of the strip.
you insert white plastic pins in holes drilled in the body of the car.
the heads of the pins are flat. the strip clips to them.
the pin is a two part deal - you position it in the hole, then you push a second piece, a small plastic peg, into a hole in the center of the pin itself. this expands the pin and anchors it in place.
I got some of these things from the dealer in Athens Ga a couple of years ago - they charged a dollar a pin.
