Turbo Head on a Non Turbo engine 900

My 94 940 dropped a valve seat in number two. I was able to find a used head on ebay but it is for a turbo engine. The casting number is the same so I went ahead and bought it.

I searched the archives for the consequences of using a turbo head on a non-turbo engine. As near as I can tell, the compression should be the same because the turbo engine gets its lower compression from dished pistons. The valves in the turbo head will be sodium filled which should be ok. The cams will be different, so I should probably switch the cams.

Did I miss anything?

The turbo motor (B230FT) uses different pistons and a different headgasket to achieve a lower compression ratio. Otherwise, you would have a serious problem with detonation as soon as the turbo spools up.

B230FT heads are a dime a dozen. Any head from a normally aspirated 240, 740 or 940 1986-1995 will fit your block and give you the correct compression ratio for a normally aspirated car.

Headgaskets for B230F and FT are identical.

Edit. 900

"B230FT heads are a dime a dozen."

Should read "B230F heads" ....Fingers are quicker than the brain. :-)

Thanks... that confirms my conclusion which means I should be able to go ahead and run the turbo head on the non-turbo engine without any problem.
How different is the turbo cam? I'm inclined to run it rather than go to the effort of switching my cam over.

If the casting numbers are the same, you should be okay. Personally, I would use the cam from the n/a head ("M" versus "T") and a new n/a headgasket.
