Aluminium Polishing and Refinishing 140-160

I posted an earlier question in regard to the refinishing of aluminium parts on my 1975 164E. After some experimenting, I successfully refinished the grille badge and sash to a blinding shine. The problem with these parts was that the protective film had hazed and chipped away due to stones and other road film. I started with a 320 grit wet sandpaper and progressed to 400 grit. I then polished it with Eagle 1 chrome and aluminium polish then finished it off with Eagle One Never Dull. Man what a difference. Not only does it shine, but I was able to blend the front to the sides without having to strip the whole sash. It really came out nooking better than new...just wish I had a new badge to top it off.
Any requests for photos...just e-mail me.

Thanks guys 140-160

I should have been a little more specific about the task. The sash and badge were gouged really bad (front end damage) so the sand paper smothed out the bumps. Unfortunately, the chips in the badge are deep and have slight spidering to them, so i can't buff them out. The clear coat is a great idea.

What does the badge on a 75 164 look like? I replaced the badge in the grill of my 74 144. It's still available from the Volvo dealer, I just had to tell them I had a 95 940. That badge was an exact match.

It's roughly 2 in by 2 in, silver leaf Volvo with logo and black background all done in reverse in plastic. It's not available from a normal Volvo dealer, maybe on a backstock shelf of an old dealer or Volvo in Sweden.
I have had a huge problem sourcing parts, but then again, I've only been at this for a month.

I'd be hesitant to clear coat them parts... paint fades and gets dull. I'd just hit the shiny parts with wax every time you do the rest of the car.. Really brings out the shine in all the chrome bits, as well as polished aluminum and stainless.

That sounds like a good way to do it, although I think maybe you did a lot more work than was neccessay.

I usually use sandpaper to smooth out things like manifolds etc. For something like a badge you should be able to get the clear finish off using Acetone or a similar chemical.

For really getting the shine back into our badge I would have used a linen buffing wheel chucked into a drill motor and dressed it with Tripoli grit.

The Tripoli will easily cut through the plastic or laquer finish and shine up the metal without cutting too deeply into it, just in case it has a thin plating of gold or chrome you don't want to damage.

Change linen wheels (never mix grits on the same wheel) and finish your polish job with 'rouge' -red - grit, which is extrmely fine, like 3000 grit.

As with any polished metal exosed to the weather, you should probably put on a coat of clear lacquer or plastic spray.

I have polished out intake manifolds until they look better than chrome, as well as my SU's and most of the car's exterior trim.

If you have a car with plastic headlight lenses, use the same routine to make them perfectly clear again, then finish off with Armorall or Aerospace 303 to keep UV damage to a miinimum.

I'll admit that I go nuts polishing things up - there's instant gratification in every job!

Good job. I usually use 00 steel wool -- no need for anythying finer -- followed by metal polish and NeverDull (great stuff, that). Works for me...
