Burning oil smell 700

This morning I started my ’85 760t 207k and ran back in the house to gather a few things for work. I was in the house for no more that 5 or 10 min. When I came out of my building and into the parking structure I smelled burning oil. The smell was coming from my tailpipe accompanied by what looked like white smoke. I mildly reved up the engine and went back to the rear of the car and the smell wasn’t as strong. After I drove to work (17 miles) I checked the smell again and nothing, no oil smell and no smoke. I did, however notice when I was going up the on-ramp (turbo fully engaged) when I shirted into 4th (5 speed trans) a poof of smoke came out of the tailpipe. My brick runs fantastic. I notice no lack of power or anything like that. What am I looking at here guys? Lay this bag of snakes out straight for me. Please let me know if you need any additional info.

Thanks,
Stover

    Burning oil smell 700

Hey, Sorry to be a bearer of bad news, but when a turbo starts to go most of the time it smokes out the tailpipe when idling. The best thing to do is to replace it or rebuild it. Check and see if it does it after a few minuets of idling after it is hot. I have a good one that I just pulled off of a car I’m parting out. It has less than 1,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt. Call me if you are interested. Jon (970) 691-3981

Well, like I said, once I got to work the exhaust smelled and looked fine. Could this be due to the seals in the turbo being warmed up and expanding?

In my experience this problem begins intermittently and eventually gets so bad that you cant let it idle at stoplights without getting some very dirty looks. I suggest that you go to the features link above and click on 700-900 FAQ and then turbo FAQ's. There is lots of info there on how to determine what is going on.
