Pontiac 400, TH 400 trans, feasibility in a 1988 740 GLE 700

any comments?

Approx 400 hp, in a volvo 740 wagon (1988) any thoughts?

I have this sitting around doing nothing but collecting dust. Doubt rear end will take torque for long. but seeing the 302 and 350 conversions, anyone ever stuff a "big block" in one? whats needed at that HP for rear end, what could i expect to break, and whats tried and true?

Chris

Rear end will likely never see the full torque- the lack of traction will see to that. My 740 has a mild L98, probably not much more than 225 HP, and I've struggled with getting the power to the ground. 3.91, limited slip Dana 30, large rear tires (225/70r15 Comp T/A), battery in trunk, still will spin both rear tires at will, at any speed up to 80 mph or so.

Great fun to drive, though. Near neutral handling with a 350 with aluminum heads. I'm not too familiar wth the Pontiac 400, but it would be a fun project.

thats what i thought, the only issue (weak link) i forsee it the front springs and the rear end.

The traction issue would probably pretty much be impossible to overcome without tubbing and slicks. which is not an option.

I just wanted something to make the 'stangs look very small in the rear view (my TIC does that pretty good)

Try the V8 Forum here. Years ago, I read of a big block in a 242. It was carbed and needed a hood scoop. Big blocks are pretty heavy. The car might be more enjoyable with a small block.

I do have to ask the obvious here, are you wanting to mate a THM-400 to say the Volvo engine or are you looking to do a V-8 conversion? If you're wanting to mate the 400 to the Volvo engine I would REALLY like to see this one however if you are planning a V8 conversion you might want to check out the conversion forum at the top of the page under FORUMS.

Chris, have you also posted over at Turbobricks? Seems folks over there are also doing many Volvo mods.

Hmm, 400hp through the rear end? My turbo is rated 162hp so that's 2.5x the horsepower it's rated for. My guess, from a mechanical and engineering perspective is this would be too much of a stress.

If it can be broken, someone at turbobricks.com has done it.
