So whats the 240 6-cylinder diesel all about?? 200

Hey all,

I have never owned, nor heard much about the 6-cylinder Volvo diesel. Can anyone tell me whether or not to stay away from it? From my guess this was not a Volvo engine? Thanks a million.

Brett

Is the 700 turbo diesel a different engine from the 240 diesel? (NMI) 200

It is turbocharged and longer lasting due to some internal changes. It also does not readily fit a 240.

Going slow, and getting used to head gaskets and timing belts as preventative maintainence. Once you have done it enough, you can do both in a day with time to spare. If you do it every two years, you should never have trouble with either.

IMO a 240 is much too heavy for such an engine, but that would depend on your driving style. be a pretty fine generator motor I suppose.

In the 244/245 Series, the D24 I-6 Diesel was available in 1981-1985. The trim level was above the DL, about as fancy at the GL.

It was in the time that gasoline prices were rising, and Diesel fuel was cheaper. It was supposed to get much better fuel efficiency. Even Oldsmobile came out with a Diesel V-8 during that time.

The engine is heavier that the I-4, so the front springs are stiffer. That's what makes the car a candidate for a V-8 conversion.

Problem, besides low horsepower, was that the cam was driven by a belt that could fail. With the 19:1 compression ratio needed for a Diesel, belt failure ws always engine demolition. I had a friend who lost one that way - camshaft broke into five pieces and the crank was twisted.

It was a VW truck engine, with the VW logo clearly visible on the block.

There was a turbo-diesel offered in the 700 Series, which owners of them still like a lot. More power, and run OK. Only a few left. At least one Brickboarder has one.

Diesel engines are very well suited to constant speed operation, as in power generation. Lotsa gears to make them OK in long-haul trucks. OK in Diesel-electric railroad locomotives. In those applications, barring fuel injection pumps, they are easy to work on. No carbies, just air. Tricky to start, what with glow plugs and such, but run forever once running. Mercedes-Benz has used them for decades.

Regards,

Bob

Run, do not walk, from a diesel 240, unless you intend to swap a red block into an otherwise good body.
It is a VW-Audi abomination, whose detractors outnumber supporters by a ratio of about 152,000:1. In other words you may hear from some that like the diesel. Let them buy it.

People get them for v8 conversions; a 240 will do but why get rid of
a reliable, quality motor?

You can probably outrun it on foot.

From what I've read its a VW motor...and you should run away from any car that was unlucky enough to be equipped with one. :)

It is a VW/Audi motor. I'm not saying that I am the 1 in 152,000 but my middle child does own a 240 diesel wagon. Really though, even if you had a good diesel technician at your disposal, unless he was your dad and owned his own Volvo repair shop and had all of the tools and all of the experience from working on them at the dealer in their hay day, I would not consider one for a daily driver.

I bought my daughter's car about five years ago and it has been a daily driver for myself and two of my children at different times and in my opinion it has been a great little car. In the past 5 years though I have done:

Head gasket
water pump
front and rear timing belts
starter
Replace 2 leaking fuel delivery pipes
Weld broken power steering bracket
Glow plugs
Have torque converter rebuilt

I bought it for $150.00 from a donation center that was sending it to the boneyard, it was in awesome shape except for the fact that it was a sleazel. It had about 150K then and around 220K now and that middle child drives the piss out of it.

Has this been a good car for me? You betcha!! Would I recommend it to someone else? You'd better be a mechanic otherwise I wouldn't touch it with the proverbial 10 foot pole.

Mark
