92 240 Transmission Skipping 200 1992

I have a 240 sedan 1992 with 133,000 miles. Recently, and only once in a while, when I come to a stop, the transmission feels like you put it in neutral, then back in drive. Also, once in a while, when shifting from reverse to drive, it takes a couple of seconds before lurching in.

The transmission fluid is at proper level, but the color is a bit off, not brown like it has been cooked, but a bit darker then usual and has a off smell.

I am going to try changing the transmission oil filter, flush the trans and install new fluid.

Any suggestions and/or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hello:

I'd try flushing it ASAP-- my first instinct would be to avoid the filter change-- it is far more complicated than flushing and isn't part of Volvo recommended maintance anymore anyhow...

Use the procedure outlined in the FAQ-- basically disconnect the top rad cooler line at the radiator and put an 8ft piece of 3/8 ID hose on the radiator output. Start the car and pump out the nasty old fluid while adding new fluid with a funnel through the dipstick tube. Easy job!

Is the tranny leaking at all around the output shaft? Any discernable play at the output shaft? If the output shaft bushing is worn enough you get some of these kinds of pressure loss problems...

These trannies are pretty robust and yours is pretty low-mile-- did the car ever have a tranny cooler leak where coolant ended up in the trans fluid (strawberry milkshake)?

    Good luck!

General wisdom here has been to leave the filter alone,
    but change the fluid.

Find the procedure here, I think its in the 700/900 FAQs (same tranny).

When mine slipped as you described, I found it was low.
    Hopefully yours will straighten up.
