So little Rover sits there happily idling, but when I press the gas pedal, the engine dies - sometimes to the point where I think she'll shut off, and then revs up. Any ideas?

    Can you drive it at all? It sounds like it could be a failed Air Mass Meter. If you have a spare swap it out and see. If not get a spare cheap from the bone yard or ebay. It is a good idea to keep spares on hand to get you going again and avoid the high cost of going to the parts store. Dan
