You can surely change to quad rectangles if you WANT to. I did on my '86. However, you can't get the bezels to fit without redoing a lot of stuff (including fenders. Thus, I cut up some sheet metal, bent it to fit, and painted it black. I think it looks fine. Between the sealed beams and running relays and 12-gauge wire, the light output it quite amazing. Not as good as my Bosch Rallye 225's, but whatever. If you like the nice stock look, go with either euro glass lights or new plastic ones with relays and you can get decent output. either way, those plastic buckets suck for lighing. good luck!

If you're still running sealed beams I would HIGHLY recommend biting the bullet and buying E-code rectangular sealed beam replacements.

When I first used my quad headlights (with sealed beams), it appeared to me that the light output was actually inferior to my set of mostly-clear plastic Aero headlights. I wasn't going to admit that to my parents, of course, but I was a little bit disappointed.

However, when my H4 ECE lights arrived a few months later and I installed them, I was blown away by the lighting. In terms of output, I'm competing with all of the non-Xenon luxury cars out there on the road. It's great.

Daniel Stern Lighting sells ECE H4 housings that "drop-in" where sealed beams are currently installed.

I've seen all the various upgrades, and would definitely love to buy some....however, getting married and having to keep the significant other in school is not a cheap endeavor. With the relays installed and brand new sealed beams, I think the light is quite impressive. Someday I'll get the H1/H4 deals, but not soon....besides, when I really need lighting I just strap on the rally lights and then its no problem. Thanks for the suggestion though...I know they will make a difference when I can afford them.

I have an '86 that I put new aftermarket OEM style lights in last year and upgraded the wiring harness with the IPD harness. The results were the next best thing to probably having the Euro glass units. I also have always thought of doing a modification to the quad rectangular lights. I hope someone responds because I just might consider doing it.

Thanks for asking....

PLASTIC LENS SET UP TO DUAL SQUARE?? 200

the square lens set up on my 90 244 is ok but it can't hold a "candle" to a glass set up. my thinking is that the quad square looks like a more direct mod. than the quad round lamps. Aso if someone knows if the large round lights could work, (single high/low type, flat hood set up) it seems like a single large round would be great. One last idea: on E30 bmws, 19xx to 1991, those have a quad round Hella lamp set ups: wonder if we can use those and the bucket/moulding and graft to fit?? Can anyone else think of a car w/ quad or single lamps that could work? thanks volvo people.........

Kane was looking at using the BMW quad round headlights in his car. He ended up using the 7-inch single round headlights.

The biggest problem is not so much getting lights mounted as it is making them look good. Obviously using BMW parts would make it a lot tougher to adapt the front "filler" pieces, if they even are the right shape at all. The Volvo quad fillers can be modified relatively easily. I'm not so sure about the quad rectangular fillers because they have reflectors at the bottom, and height is an issue.
