Car Starts Fine But Won't STOP!! 200 1982

My 82 244 keeps running even when I've taken the keys out the ignition. I have to stop it by putting it into reverse gear, then it stops.

When it does stop the headlights stay on and most of the warning lights stay on as well.

It's always had a noisy rear fuel pump, but that has stopped whining - I presume the two are connected.

Anyone have any ideas?

Brown wire from ballast resistor to coil is shorting inside your wiring harness.

I just ran a new wire over the engine (put inside some covering).

Did the Australian cars get the same wire harnesses with the insulation rot problems that US cars did?

I had a similar problem in my '82 245T. I was able to get the car to shut off by opening the hood and wiggling the wiring harness at the gray plug on the firewall. A replacement harness eventually solved the problem but I was able to fix it temporarily by wiggling that harness just right so no wires were shorting to each other.
