Goodbye BW35 140-160

I just spent a productive weekend swapping the BW35 in my 164 for a M400. No O/drive but I recon I was lucky to find a wreck with an 8 bolt flywheel and a good box. It was a 2 day struggle but well worth the effort as the car is transformed. It wasn't cheap after getting a new clutch kit, tranny mount, pilot bearing, and master/slave kits & hose. One thing to check if you ever do this is the condition of the chassis ? rails where the tranny support bots up. The holes to mount the manual support are about 6" forward of the auto ones and there could be damage from people using it as a jacking point. Mine were the cause of much cursing and hammering but were persuaded to cooperate after about 2 hours. I am now pleased to be able to get away at the traffic lights with everyone else. Viva the 164 !

    Hello,
I am planning on doing this on my 75.
Was the conversion to the manual pedal assembly hard?

      Goodbye BW35 140-160

You haven't created a profile so I don't know what part of the world you live in, but my 75 AT is starting to act up. I live in the Twin Cities area.

Where did you find a M400/M401? About how expensive was it? Rebuilt or not? Where do you find the clutch pedal, etc. stuff?
I was told that it is not worth investing in a rebuilt auto tranny, including the one still in the car. Now I wonder if the whole car is even worth anything...

      Thanks,
      Klaus

        Goodbye BW35 140-160

        I live in Portland Oregon.
        I have a 400 and 410 with one 6 bolt flywheel.
I am picking up 2 8 Bolt flywheels and 2 more trannies(one 400 and one 410) with pedal assembly for my 75 and one for my 71.
They where both pulled from wrecked cars. Not rebuilt.
I am finalizing the price as a package, including engine soon.
My 75 is worth plenty to me. $300 purchase price and it starts everyday no problem.
        My 71 is priceless.

        Tim

          Goodbye BW35 140-160

Not fair! If Portland wasn't a two day road trip from here I would have to go to this Mecca of 164 parts. Seems the Midwest road salt killed most of the samples around here.
My 75 164 is becoming priceless rapidly!

Well let me know if you ever make the trip to portland. I will have a extra set of pedals a tranny, bellhousing and I might be able to scare up another 8 bolt flywheel. Keep that 75 rollin'.

Pedal assembly was easy. Four bolts through the firewall and two at the top. The hard part was cutting a hole for the clutch master. I did it with a grinding stone on the end of a drill. Worked well but tedious.

Took it for a cruise on the freeway and the engine was turning 3100 RPM at 110KPH ( as fast as you can legally go in this country) If I had O/D it would probably encourage me to speed and believe me when I tell you that you don't get away with it for very long in Australia. I think I'll keep the money and my licence too !

    Good job. 140-160

    Congratulations on your improved status.
I'm sure the satisfaction of driving it is plenty reward.
