OBD I question - not in FAQ 200

Having never seen an OBD I unit, how does one get a code from it?

I know the OBD II has a plug in unit, but for the OBD I - how does it work?

OBD I question - not in FAQ 200

Posting your car's YEAR on the subject line can prevent confusion.

If all you have are the '86 and '87 mentioned in your signature line, then you don't have OBD I, which started with the '89. As Steve said, it's explained in the 700/900 FAQ.

OBD I question - not in FAQ 200

I know my cars do not have it .... but I am considering buying an '89 740 or a later model 240 and I am curious how it functions.
The FAQ is not very informative as to how one gets a code from the OBD I

      - I see the little illustration.
The verbiage does not tell me if it is a self contained unit or I need another piece of equipment to read the code from the unit.

That is what I am academically curious about.

No equipment needed. Theres a little lead thing attached to the unit, you stick it in the hole, press the button and count how many times the little light lights up. The FAQ is actually pretty clear, its just a little confusing if you arent actually looking at the OBD unit on the car.
