Lack of power 700 1987

My car pings and knocks under load. Once at cruising speed
or going downhill, it's quiet. Did its age and condition finally
catch up with it, or is there something that can be done
short of engine rebuild. Plugs, wires, distributor cap / rotor,
injectors, and filters are new. Car is 740T with B230 engine.
It has 170,000 miles.

We tend to all buy gas at the same place. Maybe try a different brand. Try a couple cans of injector cleaner. Double check the timing and be sure the crank pulley isn't slipping. Do the plugs look the same?

You might also want to check the back pressure in the exhaust - perhaps a cat converter is getting clogged. I had a similar problem in my 244T and it got a LOT better with a new cat.

Take a hard look at your knock sensor, which should prevent all knock at all times. If it fails, one symptom is declining power levels as the timing is altered to your disadvantage.

What level of octane are you using in your fuel? I only use Supreme with at least 92 octane. If I use anything less I'll get a slight knock too.

I have been using middle grade fuel for years. Noise is more pronounced than the kind one hears when low octane fuel is used. I'm sure there is something else.
