740t transfer pump in a 240t? 200

So my 82 242 GLT needed a new transer (in-tank) fuel pump and my neighbor had one that he bought for his 740 Turbo. I installed the pump and now my car runs WAY rich. Thick black smoke out the pipe. I set my base mixture with a dwell meter and it's fine till I plug in my Oxygen sensor. I have to richen the mixture to keep the car running (stalls like it's too lean with the sensor pugged in.) Question is, could the transfer pump be pumping too much fuel? Or does my sensor need replaced?

Thanks!

It's not the pump -- this is a routine swap 200

It's routine for 240 owners to upgrade to a 700 pump. IPD explains how to do this (it requires some modification to the pickup tube because the 700's pump is longer); but there's never been any mention of this job affecting fuel delivery to a point where such adjustments are needed. The 700 pump's benefit is purely to ease the load on the main fuel pump, and lessen any vapor lock.

Also, the prepump (even the 700's) hardly generates enough pressure to cause this problem -- certainly, it would be moderated by the main fuel pump farther downstream.

I think the problem is not in the fuel pump. I've got a 740T in-tank pump in my 245T and have never had a problem running rich.

Me too. Maybe the car was adjusted to compensate for inadequate fuel delivery before you installed the pump? I'd check the basic settings under the hood first.
