M46 rear support alignment 200

Does anybody know whether an M46 gearbox is supposed to sit in the middle of the transmission tunnel, or like mine, be offset 1/2" towards the right?
When I relaced the original M47 some years ago with an M46, I used the old support crossmember (just bolting it into the alternative set of holes).
The side od the box occasionally rubs on the transmission tunnel, when starting with a lot of torque, or on rough ground.
It is a new rubber mount, and I cannot see any other position for it to mount in.
I read recently the the M46 uses thicker spacers on the cross member, so I tried adding some washers. It is much better, but still I am puzzled that the box is not exactly in the middle of the tunnel.
Anyone have any observations on this? Is there a special M46 cross member?

    Cliff,
Does the cross member look absolutely straight? This is a part of the car that will take a beating if driven on rough roads (/off road). I just noticed on the 245 I bought for my son that the cross member was bent slightly upwards, obviously a result of careless driving on a rough road by the previous owner (or a car thief, I have also found pieces of glass inside the driver's side door). Oh well, the slightly raised gearbox makes for better access to the crank position sensor.

    Erling.

Erling, thanks, but yes, it seems absolutely undamaged. The odd thing I notice is not that it sits too high, but that the gearbox mounting point is offset from the centreline of the car.
