I just received ,from an eBay seller, a used ZF power steering rack in what appears to be good shape. Unfortunately it was advertised as a Cam rack ( it has ZF stamped right on it!?), and my 86 240 for which it was ordered , currently has a Cam rack. I assume that the only difference is in the mounting brackets? I usually see kits at the suppliers for converting a ZF to a Cam,not the other way around,allegedly because there are less ZF racks in the parts food chain and that the Cam racks seem to have held up better over time.
How much of a PIA would it be to convert/install this item? Should I even bother? I will give a plug ( pun intended?) to the Lucas power steering additive/snake oil stuff. It slowed a massive fluid leak long enough to get the 240 through the winter, and let me deal with this in the spring.

Thanks for all the replies. When the kid got in last night, I took a look and everything pretty much looks the same except for the mounts. Groton sells an all inclusive mount kit for $50+, which starts to kick the total cost of the project to silly levels considering it is a used rack. I thought I was saving my son some money, he is a senior in college and working part time, and myself some time buying used on eBay. Wrong again. This one may go the shed parts depot for future use, and he may get a re-built Cam rack for his birthday next week. Thanks again.

It ought to swap right in, hoses and steering coupling are the same for ZF or CAM. True, the mounting clamps might differ, maybe have a look in a junkyard or other "known good" similar brick?

I seem to recall reading that they are compatable. Outter Tie rod ends are the same and the rack should come with inner tie-rods so as suggested, pump connections are your issue. I think VLV world or FCPG had something more about this...

I know the tie rods are different. I'm not sure if the PS pump fittings and the lower steering u-joint might be different.
