Steering Box question 444-544

Hi guys,
I just rebuilt the steering box on my 61 544, and I was wondering if it is normal to have more play in the pitman arm when it is in a turned position than when it is pointing dead-on. I'm hoping I did this properly. It's still on my workbench, so I can still mess with it if necessary. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Rob

Yep thats just how they are. So make sure you adjust the play when the pitman arm is in the straight/right position, otherwise the gears will bind in that position.
It's just a way to make sure the steering has no (or the least) play when the car is moving straight forward and at higher speeds (which is when the steering is in the straight forward position (at least most of the time...))

Cheers, Ben

Yep - I wonder how many gearboxes have been destroyed over the years by people adjusting the slack out of them with the wheels turned to one side. Once you do that and turn it back to straight ahead it puts a huge amount of stress on everything.
