96 960 - Doornail in Driveway 900 1996

I got my 96 960 back from the dealer on Friday, after having to replace the rack. I parked it in the driveway with the front endslightly downhill. Saturday evening when I started it up the check engine light was on. I shut it down and restarted. It fired up, ran rough, coughed, sputtered and stalled. Subsequent attempts get nothing.

I originally thought "fuel pump," but checked the schrader at the end of the fuel rail and there is pressure in the system.

Any ideas?

I was totally wrong. The shop's reader gave a Mass Air Flow Sensor code. Long and short, the rough start on Saturday apparently blew off the main vacuum hose.

Do you mean that little stubby hose that connects to the idle valve? If that is the case maybe the reason for you rough start is the fuel pressure regulator is bad. Had that happen several years ago, had some back firing on warm starts, that little hose would get blown off. Replaced the FPR that solved that.

Have you checked the OBD code? That would be the first place to start.

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, I don't have an OBD2 reader yet, but I think I'm going to go get one in the morning. Right before I call AAA to come haul this beast to my mechanic.

Of course, I just looked at the car and the OBD II port is in no way where the Chilton's manual says it is supposed to be. Chilton's says it is supposed to be in the console. I can't find it.

The port is in the vertical section of the center console, on the passengers side, next to the emergency brake handle. If you look you will see a small plastic plate that slides off and the port is inside.

Thanks. It was exactly where you indicated.

What would be a good scanner to purchase that I could get at a parts house, as opposed to waiting for one I ordered over the net? Would it be better to get one that would either bridge to or store and upload to a PC, as opposed to merely a code reader?

I'm really not that familiar with the tools, so I don't know how to advise you myself. I have always relied on either using or borrowing the tool from my local Autozone! But, I've always been able to drive the car so far.

Take a look at the advice given in the 700-900 FAQs on the different OBD tools:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm#OBDIIScanners

Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out.
