Now what'd I get myself into??? 444-544 1957

Hi all,

In the grand tradition of making excited leaps before checking the depth of the proverbial water [read: cowpie], I started the swap of my 1957 444L fixed rear quarter windows to a later hinged pair BEFORE I had any info on how to do it. I figured I'd have to drill a couple holes in the pillar for the front tab of the window frame, but when I removed the fixed window last night there was nothing but shiny virgin black paint under the moulding and certainly no place for the tab to go.

Now, I've heard that it was fairly popular back in the day to retrofit older PV's with pop out quarter windows. Does anybody know the process? Or can anyone send me a pic of their PV pop outs? Perhaps someone has one apart and can take a pic?...

Thanks for the help!

    Hello Aidan,

444 pop-out quarter windows were available only as an accessory, pn#279323/4 for left and right sides, respectively. The hinge pieces of these were designed to screw directly to the B-pillar, where you're seeing the shiny black virgin paint, adjacent to the stamped flange. These windows came with their own seals and latches. If memory serves (not often, at this point) the accessory package also included a channel to help support the window seal.

Factory installed pop-out windows (544 only) were hinged via tabs on the forward edge of the chromed window frame. The tabs entered slots stamped into the B-pillar, and were attached to the body via screws through the B-pillar, visible inside the door jamb. 544 models had 2 recesses stamped into the B-pillar (see image), where these screws would locate. 444 B-pillars lack both the slots and stamped recesses, making installation of the 544 factory pop-outs rather difficult, if not impossible without minor surgery. I'm not certain, but I believe that there is also a slight difference in the window opening flange designs between the 444 and 544, so the 544 seals may not fit into the 444 openings.

    Best of Luck,

I have some pics of my pop outs (PV544 though)
They are far from perfect. (Bad light, out of focus)
But with some help of Paint Shop Pro I've managed to make them watchable. ;)

    Update:
I've sent you the pictures. Check your email...

Thanks Inge! Specifically I'm stumped as to how the front of the pop out windows attach to the B pillar. Does anyone have a photo of this attachment?

      Thanks,
      Aiden
