Instantaneous power loss when making sharp left turns and accelerating 200 1988

This problem is an apprent electrical failure/power loss, but only when making left turns under acceleration. I actually submitted this a while back, but lost the thread. I do remember a response saying that the problem was probably related to the wiring harness near the front and to the left of the engine. (Oil filter area.) I checked there and found no loose plugs and no frayed or worn wiring/insulation. Are there any plugs in that area that can come loose or corrode? Would someone mind giving me the rundown again? Sorry for the repeat request, and thanks again for the help.

I'd look at the connector for the Air Mass Meter, which is front left (left as in sitting in the drivers seat, not looking at it with the hood up.)

See if the plug is fully seated into the AMM. It's a 6-pin plug, and the AMM is that black cylinder mounted about halfway down the inside of the front strut tower, with the big air ducts to each end of it.

Possibly that's coming loose or wiggling around when you're on the throttle hard. And that probably means you have very soft or maybe broken engine mounts. The one below the oil filter is usually the culprit, and the trans mount is not far behind it. They can be replaced yourself if you have a good jack, ramps or stands, and don't mind getting very dirty for a couple hours.

Otherwise they aren't expensive parts and each should take a shop about an hour.
Good luck!

Something else that may be the problem, is a bad prepump in the fuel tank.

If this is occurs when the tank is about half empty, fill the tank, if it goes away you have a bad prepump.

I wouldn't suspect the pre pump... 200 1988

... because it works in, and draws from, a surge/splash well about the size of a gallon jug. The fuel in that well stays relatively stable when the rest of the fuel sloshes away in a turn.

Like Aye Roll, I think an electrical problem due to engine torque roll (right), accenuated by Left turn centrifugal force, would be more likely. Especially if aggravated by a separated Left mount, which is often the case.

I've seen cars run for some time with a dead prepump. Not good for the Main pump, they say -- but not apt to cause a turn-related hiccup either, IMO.

My wife's '88 240 did exactly the same thing when turning at a round-about (or circle for the South Africans). Especially if it's a bit uphill. Would start up right away. Did it about 3 times and then would not go again. Tried to remove the pre-pump, but could not get it out. Appeared to be OK anyway. After putting it back together again the problem went away. I think it was a bad electrical connection in the trunk at the fuel tank.

Some time later something similar happened where the car would just die all of a sudden and you could start it up while still in motion and carry on. Turns out that there was a water leak (during heavy rain) and the fuel pump relay got filled up. It was a bad design to let the relay hang down, I've turned it around.

Fuel Injection relay mounting 200 1988

"It was a bad design to let the relay hang down, I've turned it around."

I wasn't designed that way. That's what happens over time, usually with different owners. The relay should have a metal clip that attaches it to a metal rail there on the firewall, oriented so that water can't get in.
