oil lamp 700 1990

i have a 1990 745 gle 16v. the tb snapped and a new head was put in. the cluster was stolen out of the car while it was parked getting the service done. so i put a nother ine in with approx the same miles drove it for a day and it was fine then on this morning's commute the oil lamp starts fading in and out (thats right fading) never happened before on any of my volvos i didnt really get time to check it out yet. but theres plenty of oil, any suggestions? could it be a bad cluster? also the high beam indicator works inetrmittantly. thats why i assumed it was a bad cluster. thanks in advance
jippi

When my 1987 was doing that, it turned out to be the oil pressure sensor.

was the light fading in and out? out of all the volvos i maintained the light either comes on or goes off but it never faded the only time it faded is when the alt grush goes and thats all of the warning lights not just the oil pressure, but ill give it a try when i get back home tonite, i work bout 40 miles from home and i wasnt sure if it was safe to drive home, without causing major damage to the engine. thanx for the help

It began by ever so faintly lighting at idle and going out while driving. Then slowly progressed to the point (over days)that it was lit up continuously. I have heard others here talking about the same symtoms but with different problems. Search the FAQ section. As i remember (don't rely on my memory) it had something to do with a spring and the oil pump.

the car has a bad head that day on the way home the car started smoking and there was a strong oil burning smell. when the valves got bent the guide where the valve stem sits cracked there was a hair line fracture(maybe) and uver time the crack got bigger and the oil then leaked into the cylinder and it started toi burn the oil. this also explains a partial cause to failing nj emissions. right? i0t burns oil but there is no cross contamination between the water and oil. so the head gasket is out. why else would it burn oil? is my reasoning right?
thanks jippi
