Volvo's word on identifying rack unit on late model 940 cars. 900

I've done quite a bit of research lately trying to get a fix on the type of rack unit in my 95 940 sedan. The data here on this site is not complete or accurate for my model year apparently and perhaps others too. Among other things the service plate shown does not match the format of mine and thus doesn't help. Nor do the illustrations help. BUT, if one can believe Century Volvo parts department here in Huntsville, AL who researched it for me here's the scoop. 940 cars with VIN ending in 173671 and below have a CAM type rack unit Volvo part number 5003682. Those with VIN ending in 173672 and above have a TRW unit Volvo part number 5003908.

Call me crazy, but the last part of the VIN is the chasis number/serial number and should not be the same across multiple cars. I could be wrong about it, but my 1995 940 has a VIN ending in 132974. However, I've crawled around under the car and positively identified my rack as a CAM rack with 14mm rods. I agree that the FAQ is not a complete as it could be in this regard.

My vehicle information plate was similarly devoid of a code regarding rack identification. I had to rely on rod size and boot shape in order to correctly ID the rack. The differences are fairly clear if you look at the boot. Also CAM and TRW racks seems to use the same parts - at least where the tie rods and boots are concerned. Check the VLV World parts diagram for a clear picture of the different rack parts. Also ask at FCP Groton.

Six Volvos: all wagons.... 1972 145S, 1976 245 DL, 1983 245 GL, 1986 740 GLE, 1990 740 GL, now a 1995 940. Number 7 (a 1967 122S Wagon) is on the way.... Who needs a sedan, when you've got storage compartments in a wagon?

Thanks for your reply.

I agree completely. Your VIN/SN is in the range that was identified by Volvo as being the CAM rack Volvo PN 5003682 since your VIN/SN is in the "173671 AND BELOW range of vehicles.
"940 cars with VIN ending in 173671 and below have a CAM type rack unit Volvo part number 5003682. Those with VIN ending in 173672 and above have a TRW unit Volvo part number 5003908."

My vehicle is VIN/SN above that range and is thus a TRW rack which is not addressed here in the FAQ.

I am going to try to update the FAQ with this information.

A relief! 900

I'm getting new tie rods (inner/outer) and new boots installed tomorrow. I felt 90% positive that I identified the rack correctly, but without a code one could never be 100% positive. Since I already ordered and recieved the parts, I was a bit concerned that I might (10% worried) have ordered the wrong parts. So thanks! This info puts my mind at ease.
