Is this deal too good to be true? 200

Hello all,
I found this 240 on autotrader.com for only $1500...It's a '90, with all the options:power everything, and even a sunroof..It has only 130K on it with no rust whatsoever...It's dark blue with blue interior. However it's in NH, and I live in RI so I'm wondering if it's even worth going to go see it....Its on "autotrader.com" Thanks guys!

(Also it's an auto, no ABS)

I can't seem to find the car on autotrader.com Can you post a link? Hopefully it hasn't sold! For $1500 it's worth a look if you can get confirmation that the car isn't a complete rust bucket.

In one of your older posts concerning the swap to the round quad headlights, which junkyard "right down the street" are you talking about? I too live in EG (Lillibridge section) and usually hit Robertson's Auto Salvage in Wareham, MA.

Good luck with your search.

It's not rusty, but it may have been damaged earlier. Carfax is needed on this one. It may be a good buy, newer 240's don't get rusty - the electrical stuff just crumbles. Check it out. It's not far from your place to there, 3 hours? In the midwest, we go that far to have a drink or two.

Carfax 200

Hmmm,

Car fax is kind of useless really. People put a lot of false trust in their reports. A friend of mine got into a high speed accident in his brand new Honda. The insurance company totaled it and its still rolling around today with a COMPLETELY clean carfax. There are a lot of title washing services out there and cars are frequently transported from state to state using title loopholes to get rid of salvage title status and accident reporting on the cars.

I don't even bother with carfax reports anymore when I buy. For a 10+ year old car you have to assume that it HAS been in some kind of collision in its lifetime. Its important to look over your car top to bottom and inspect it yourself if there has been a repair its easy to spot if you know what to look for. Even if a vehicle has been wrecked it still can be a very safe and good car depending on the extent of the damage and the quality of the repair. The paranoia over damaged cars is really amusing. Running away hysterically from a car that has just had a fender replaced or other non structural body panel replaced is just an act of stupidity. Not everyone is like that but unfortunatly the under informed unrealistic consumers seem to be out there in mass numbers.

To the original poster and the person I responded to Im not being critical of you just mentioning how I feel about carfax.

Regarding the car I would take a look at it. There are tons of old wives tales about price and condition out there. When I went looking for my current 240 It was priced at $2999 so one could have assumed it was in "average" condition. It was not in average condition at all it was a two owner car the current owner being the owner of an Independant Volvo repair shop who had put over $7000 worth of service work and upgrades into the car. The owner might me motivated to sell or his area might not be a really good market. Here in Georgia I see 240 sedans go in the low $1000's in great condition. These same cars could sell for double and tripple their asking prices in the Northeast.

Carfax 200

What a pretty buggy you have! The hardest part of buying a used car is being able to trust the seller. Being lucky enough to find a pristene example at any price is just that, luck.
All three of my Volvos have been in accidents. The 850 had fender benders which meant I bought it with new bumpers too. The V70R has a normal front bumper instead of the R type, but it is black and not too noticeable. Frame is straight on all three, engine and tranny work great, and I am satisfied with the cars.
New cars are for rich people. I get examples that have been proven over 5 years.

Heh heh,

Dunno about that. There are a lot of rich people riding around in used cars. For me a used car is a financial decision. For the extra money you pay on a new car in interest, depreciation, insurance and service you don't really get that much back other than the same car that you signed the dotted line on the contract with which may have a feature or two more than the one you traded in on. My experience unfortunatly has been that new cars are NOT more reliable than used ones. With a used car I can easily pay cash and any repairs I do to the vehicle are issues I won't have to worry about in the next few years of ownership. Most of my cars I could sell for exactly what I paid for them or slightly more.

You know the saying never judge a book by its cover I suppose the same thing can be said about never judge the person by the car they drive up in. The unfortunate truth to our society is that most people don't (and can't in most cases) pay cash for a $35K+ car and most of those people giving you dirty looks in traffic have a really BIG car payment.

Ok I have to admit a V70R does sound like a lot of fun. I used to love the shock factor with my S70 when I would blow away some unsuspecting BMW driver at a light. My S70 was a sedan and almost looked the part with its spoiler and Nautic Blue Metalic paint. A wagon would be MUCH more fun because of the stealth factor.

Nope.

Not too good to be true.

It's a 1500 asking, maybe 700-800 as a selling price.

Probably rusty and needs a few hundred bucks of mechanical work too.

If it's not close enough to go see yourself, don't worry about it.
