garrett turbo replacement 900

i have to replace the garrett unit on my '91 945se, and was wondering if there are any hints or tips other than what is in the faq, since they seem to be concerned with mitsu models. i can't tell you what garrett it is, since it's not on the turbo i.d. page, other than it's #465169-1, 3517642. do i need to order gaskets or anything else that a used (not rebuilt) unit would not have with it? are there any pitfalls particular to this unit? any general advice not covered in the tips section? how long should it take a mildly skilled diy'er with big hands?

thanks all.

garrett turbo replacement 900

It is a Garrett T25, and it is identifed in the 700/900 FAQ.

You can re-use all of the copper washers. Since your turbo mounts with nuts accessible from the front side of the exhaust manifold, you should be able to replace it in 2-3 hours.

garrett turbo replacement 900

In December I replaced my Turbo on my 945SE and I ordered a rebuilt by Eriksson at FCP Groton and I think it cost me about $500. My turbo was just smoking a little, so it was not completely shot and it was easily rebuildable.
I only later discovered a turbo shop here in Miami that would have rebuild my turbo for a little over $200, should I go back I would have saved by having it rebuilt locally.
The installation is very easy, give yourself a favor and unbolt the catalythic converter from the rest of the exhaust, otherwise you will have to bend and force the exhaust considerably to refit the turbo, as I did, and I now ended with a crack in the exhaust tube because of that bending and pulling...
