So long as the bell housings are interchangeable it should work. The '89 should be an LH2.4 car with the speed sensor bolted to the back of the block and the notch in the bell housing to accomodate it. You will need to swap out the flywheels as well and mount the hydraulics for the clutch.

Oh they should match up no problem but you are going to need the late style bell housing that has the notch in it for the engine speed sensor and you will need the late style flywheel for the speed sensor to read off of. The '89 b230ft,what kind of trans does it have mated up to it right now? If it has an auto or no trans on it now you will need to come up with this stuff if it already has an M46 on it you can just swap out the bell housing and I would think you would be good to go.

You are planning on putting in a B230FT, what does it currently have in it, a B230FT I would hope?

Since it was an automatic you will need a few more things than a trans and the right bell housing. You will also need all of the clutch components, i.e pedal assembly, slave cylinder, master cylinder, hosing to and from, wire harness (which is different between an '84 240 and an '89), relays. This sounds like a bit of a nightmare indeed. Is your heart set on have a manual transmission? Otherwise I would just replace the auto trans and be done with it.

it currently has a B230ft in it. yeah, you do have a point there. but i love driving 5 speed. my first car was stick and since i've loved it. i just got this volvo for a steal and drove it for a year. i guess ill just put another auto in there.

what are the tranny model numbers for the 89' 700/900?.

i do realize all the parts i will need other than the tranny, it was a good deal on that 84 240 m46 i found.
