87 760 opinion 700 1987

I saw an ad in the paper today for an "87 760 for $500. I know nothing about the 700 series cars so I don't even know what to ask the guy when I call. What do I need to know?

Any thoughts??

    id go for itand find another one for sale.Iwas in the same position over the v6 put took the plunge anyway.
    superb engine and car,miles better than any current volvo

    If that is a sedan, then the rear shocks are going to be self-leveling Nivomats which can be quite expensive to replace (about 500$ for a set from IPD, twice as much from the dealership). See if the tail end is drooping after a short drive. The older sixes have a problem with oil galleys getting blocked over time & causing the engine to eat camshafts, I don't recall off the top of my head if 87's still have this issue. The turbo four will be much easier & cheaper to maintain.

      the 760s 1987 and on are nearly bullet proof as far as cams are concerned.

      overheating them will kill them though.

        That's what I thought, it was somehere around that time that they took care of that problem. Overheating is quite a double-edged sword - if it get away with "only" toasted headgaskets, then you awarded with the task of trying to get those heads off without screwing them up in the process. As I understand, this requires the use of appropriate braces while unbolting the heads.

          Not only that but just getting the head off can be tricky. Apparently the liners can stick to the head gasket. If you pull the head straight off you run the risk of disturbing the liners.

    Well for starters is it a V6 or turbo 4. If it's a V6 the probable reason it's $500 is that it was overheated and warped the heads.

    I would ask if it's running, how well is it running. Check for oil in the water, water in the oil. chocolate milkshake looking stuff in the oil filler stuff can be a tipoff.

    The V6 is full of hoses and o-rings (as I am painfully aware of now). Look in the galley bewteen the heads under the intake manifold for coolant collection. You can have leaks there and never know it because the coolant evaporates and a lot can accumulate there be fore showing up on the ground.

    The 760 is full of vacuum operated devices and motors which might be problematic.

    I have an '87 760gle with 252k miles. Its been a great car but lately has been giving me fits and it was reasonably maintained...I thought.
