i have a 740 2.3 turbo intercooler with a 4speed manual and a goosed overdrive.
Have just obtained a 2.3 740 n/a with a 5 speed. It is the same age, so i am wondering if the 5 speed box can be used as a direct replacement in my overdrive setups place??

    Plenty of discussion of this in the past few weeks on the board, yes it does fit (not direct swap as such, you'll need to also swap driveshaft, possibly also the flywheel/clutch though I think the M46 in the turbo used the same one). However the concensus is this isn't a great idea as the M47-5spd doesn't hold up too well to the turbo's torque. M46-4spd+OD is a much stronger transmission. No doubt you could trade it for a good M46+OD (and probably some cash too) as good M47s seem scarce. I'd use it in a non-turbo in a heartbeat, but not in a turbo. Just my $0.02 worth.

      I have to agree. When they sent us technicians to manual transmission school the M47II was just making it's debut and one of the things that they said is that you would never see one in a turbo car. Their reasoning for this was that the max horsepower rating for that gear box was right at what the B230FT would put out. The M46 however is rated higher so they put it in all of the turbo cars. So while you can physically stuff one it I would not do so unless you planned on driving it easy.

          I too am in a similar situation. I wanted a manual tranny, and found a m47 in the jy. Pulled it out and cleaned it up and put it in my car, before i found out it was no good for turbo cars. Now i need to take it easy till i get a t5 adapted to it.
