Reinforcing early 140 sway bar mounting spots... 140-160

I've heard of people reinforcing the mounts for swaybars on the early cars, and that the later 140s were already more reinforced... Fidel? Anyone else? What are the differences, any pictures? Can anyone explain what they did to reinforce the mounting points?

I think I may want to do a little reinforcing to my 1968 arms before I take off my rear bar for good and try to make the front bar as stiff as possible...

    Wishbone reenforcement. 140-160

I have broken a few lower front wishbones, they are fairly fragile combined with stiff rollbars. I strengthen mine buy laying a length of 3/8" rod in the rolled groove & welding it in + I add a few bits & pieces around the swaybar area.

Yeah, I'd like to see what he thinks when he stiffens up the front and takes the bar off the rear. It *should* result in more understeer than stock, even if it's a little flatter than stock.

On my 164 with the IPD sway bar, no rear bar, bilstein HD front
shocks, KYB rear shocks, crazy progressive rear springs I found on
a 242 turbo and stock front springs, my 164 was totally neutral and
flat in turns but was easy to break loose the rear with the throttle.
Easily the most fun car to drive I've ever had. Too bad the body
was mostly rust, paint and bondo with a little bit of metal here and
        there.

one my 145 i have not strengthened the conection yet. have not broken it either.

on the 142 i am removing the stock mount compleatly. i will be installing a block with several holes for mounting the end link. so i will be able to change the rate very easly.

My 71 has reinforcements in the rear. Not sure if they are original. But they are just square pieces of sheetmetal welded/attatched to the floor under the rear seat.

And now for something completely different.

Sorry, I meant to mention for the front. The rear of the car did not originally come with a swaybar, so the IPD one comes with those reinforcing plates. So yeah, they're supposed to be there. When I got my car though, I didn't have any and the rear bar was ripping through the floor...

        Hi,
I got some nice thick pieces of angle iron and cut them into right and left sided triangles and then wielded them to either side of the sway bar mounts of the lower control arms. Before this I was constantly cracking them (the mounts)as I plowed my sled through whatnot.
I am running ADDCO sway bars(fat), polly bushings(all around), VPD springs, and Koni shocks at their stiffist setting. The rear ADDCO bar does not mount to the floor. It bolts to the front and back of the trailing arm.
I ran IPD bars on my old 142GT way back when but can not remember what they were like.

I am pretty happy with my current set up. I may try taking the rear bar off just to see what it is like.

Sorry I do not have a camera or I would post pics.

P.S. A very noticeable improvement that I reciently made was to remove the heavy old 240 style front and rear bumpers and mount the cooler way lighter early 140 bumpers. They must be a quarter of the weight.

But now you can't run into a moose at 35 kmh and escape unscathed!! (Other than angering the moose that is).

Yeah I know. The moose, the axis deer and the soccer moms in their big XC90s!....its hard to sleep at night sometimes.... I am going to have to be a lot more careful.
