The 1988 model year was the first year for the M47 in the 740 series. It was used only in normally aspirated cars.

      will the m47 be a good swap for a 93 940 turbo?

If you're dead-set on a traditional 5-speed, then you have a few options left:

1.) Look for a Volvo M90 (doubtful you'll find one outside of Europe)
2.) Supra/Celica gearbox (conversion kit from Dellow Automotive)
        3.) Getrag M51 from a BMW (bell-housing available from S.A.M.)
4.) Borg Warner T5 (from a Mustang, conversion kit from Vintage Performance)

When I get around to building the engine I want (350 to 400 HP), I'll either swap in a T-56 or Getrag 226 (BMW M3/M5) 6-speed. The BMW one is currently the top pick.
