Dead alternator now no start! 200 1989

OK, here goes. My friend's 1989 240 wagon killed the alternator and the battery. Replaced the alt with a reman and charged up the batt just fine. Of course, now the dammed thing won't start. Yes, I checked the ECU fuse, and it does have gas- could something have burned up??!! Unfortunately the car is sitting in a Burger King lot 2 hours away...

Define "won't start" - does it crank? Does it have spark? Do you hear the fuel pumps running? If you hold a mechanic's stethoscope to the injectors can you hear them clicking as the engine is cranked? And when you say it "killed the alternator & battery" do you mean the alternator just died of natural causes (age & wear)& the battery ran down, or was there a wiring breakdown that shorted the alternator & burned it out?

Yes it does crank, seems like it wants to start. The alt must have died of old age (it was soaked in oil from an oldleak; warning lights were flashing and radio died just prior)and then sucked the batt dry. Unfort I didn't check spark or fuel delivery (I was in a rush and P.O.!)She's ready for the salvage yard anyway-we were just hoping we could get a few more months out of her...
