Odometer quit--probably the little gear? 200 1990

Hi All,

Just got back from a 300 mi round-trip to the college my son will be attending next year. He reset the 240's odometer after refilling the tank, and now it no longer works. I've had this problem with other cars--usually the little gear in the electric speedometer has lost a tooth or two . . .

I found a few folks on the web that sell replacement gears (including ipd) at a cost of $25 to $50. Any experience good/bad with any of them?

BTW, I'd heard that one should only reset the odo when the car is at rest--so that's how I've been having him do it, yet we still had this problem. Is the "at rest" advice good, or is it the stuff of "urban legend"?

Thanks in advance!

Steve A-

Thanks to all for the responses. I took the speedo apart this PM and sure enough, 3 teeth were gone from the little rubber gear. I'll try the folks you recommended and see how it works.

Thanks again,

Steve A-

The guy is great. I ordered a replacement that didn't fit so he sent me out one right away that did. My speed wasn't right so he sent me two with different tooth numbers. Very good guy to work with. My odo has worked fine ever since.

OdometerGears.com

If it stopped working immediately after resetting the trip odometer, then almost certainly the small gear broke. I had this problem, and I replaced the gear with a new one from the above website. I just rolled over 8,000 miles on the new gear, and it's given me no problems.

I didn't know that ipd sold gears, but I'm guessing it's on the expensive side. The $29 worked fine for me.

I've also heard that you are only supposed to reset the trip odometer at rest. However, given the propensity for these cars to shred the gears that are stressed, I no longer reset my trip odometer at all. It's not a big enough of a feature for me to risk breaking the whole odometer and having to pull the instrument cluster again.

Before you start tinkering with the odometer, try resetting it again if you haven't done so already. This corrected a problem on our 90 745, which started shortly after resetting as in your case. Apparently, the gears will sometimes stick after resetting and the problem can be corrected simply by resetting again. I picked up this hint from an earlier Brickboard post. I drove without an odometer for about 3 months, putting off digging into the instrument cluster before I saw the post and tried it.

IGNORE PREVIOUS POST 200 1990

My memory failed me on that one. What I reset was the engine service light, not odometer. My apologies.
