I'm a dope. I must have cut one too many wires. Maybe more.
Oh well. I blame the maniac who rewired the car in the first place.
How does the 12v get from the battery to the wire harness? I would
normally look at one of my other 140s but I can't figure it out from
that one either.
I've checked every exposed terminal on the wire harness inside the
engine compartment and a couple inside the car, and found nothing that
connects to the battery.
This car does have an aftermarket delco alternator and some somewhat
professional looking aftermarket stuff associated with that alternator.
As far as I can tell, there is a 00 gauge wire that runs from the +
on the battery to a terminal on the starter. From there, I can't figure
it out at all.
Sorry to ask such a silly question. I thought I knew how this stuff
works but clearly I was mistaken...
thanks,
chris

I went into my shed and found an early 164 wire
harness I had pulled out with the idea that I may
want to use it to rewire the 145. I poked around
and I think I've got the answer...
The answer to my question is:
battery -> starter post
starter post -> ignition key terminal 30
ignition terminal 30 (different post) -> fuse block
ignition terminal 30 (same post as above) -> light switch
and also
a post from the ignition sends power to the fuse block
if the ignition is on
a post on the light switch sends power to the fuse block
if the lights are on
All I'm going to have to do from here is run a new
heavy gauge wire from the starter post to the ignition
terminal 30 and that should get everything else going.
Does this seem correct?
Thanks all -- I wish I had remembered that I've got
a whole, mostly unmolested 164 harness sitting in the
shed. Sometimes I wonder what else I've got stewing
back there.

You just told us what my 164 looks like. Battery to starter to fuse. Don't throw that 164 harness away, take a picture(s) of it so the rest of us can look at it! Mine is starting to dry rot in places.

I'm at a bit of a loss myself... I poked around at my '68 wagon and it's pretty hard indeed to figure out where them wires go. I can say that the main feed comes off the starter, not the battery terminal.
From the starter, it looks like I've got a large wire that disappears on the right (US passenger) side of the firewall.. I think that one eventually finds its way to (or perhaps from) the alternator.
Then there is another large red wire that goes through the firewall on the other (US drivers) side. I'm guessing that one feeds power to stuff. That's the one that *was* likely hooked to your amp meter.. That is, your amp meter was in-line on that wire, and you need to find where the other end of it went. Then run another wire to that spot, and to the starter lug (or battery post). That's my best guess.. perhaps later I'll pull the lower dash panel and try to dig deeper for you.

I and maybe others forgot what year your 140 was.
My 73 came with a 6mm^2 wire running from the alt to a terminal strip near the battery. The battery also connected to the strip, as did the main power wire to the interior.
I've rewired the car, but at least I kept notes :)

Oops -- it's a 68.
As far as I can see, there is the 00 gauge wire to the starter and
nothing else.
Prior to my starting this, the car ran, but then it also had some heavy
gauge wires running into the interior from the starter terminal and into
the amp meter. I took those off and now, oops, I need to put something
else in. The amp meter made me nervious, though. Give me wires without
moving parts any day of the week...
thx,
chris

Well, yeah, everything ran through the ammeter before. If it didn't, the ammeter wouldn't work.
What you needed to do was to remove the ammeter and jump the two wires together.
Now what you need to do is replicate that.

So the correct place to run the unfused 12v wire is from the
starter post to the light switch? What gauge of wire would be
reasonable?
Thanks,
chris

Are you sure it went to the light switch? I woulda thought to the fuse block
with a branch off to the lights. My 69 164 has a big wire on the starter top
post, but I haven't checked where it goes. Only the main cable from the
Battery to the starter post.

In AWG, I would run no less than 8 gauge, 6 might be preferable.
Metric equivalent= 6.0 mm^2
I bought much of my wire at a boat/marine supply - good stuff!
