Remanufactured Alternator with no ground terminal 200 1990

Hi all,

In my seach for an alternator from NAPA and then Champion I am finding that they have no terminal to hook the ground (compared to my original Bosch). Is there any way around this or is it luck of the draw on these beacause some have a ground terminal and some don't.

It's late Saturday, so I hope you have by now repaired the ground problem.

    Maybe not, here's an idea....

The ground wire must connect the engine block to the alternator frame. Any way that can be done will work. Use of a 14 gauge or heavier wire is important.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Remanufactured Alternator with no ground terminal 200 1990

    Hello,

I had the same problem years ago on my 82. The rebult unit had no extended bolt to attach the existing ground wire. I ended up making a ground wire by placing a clip on one side and connecting it under the nut that attaches the alternator to the car. This nut touches the alternator housing. The other end I spliced to the existing ground wire that was attached the housing on the OEM unit, which now has no where to go. The bottom line is you have ground the alternator housing to the engine block. Use a good gauge wire, 14 or better and keep it short. Hope that helps.

I've never seen one *with* a ground "terminal". Usually one of the bolts that holds the case together is a wee bit longer and has 2 nuts. The ground is a ring terminal that gets sandwiched between the 2 nuts.

The ones I seen have two terminals one for the main thick red wire and secondly the one for the little red wire nothing else, that's why I'm confused. Where does the ground go. I've sent two back, this is getting riduculous unless I'm missing something. I wish they were like the original

As Evan explained, the ground strap attaches to the engine block and to the alternator by way of ring terminals. I'm not sure what you're looking for... Does your ground strap have a spade terminal instead? I saw one alternator with a male spade terminal attached to one of the housing screws and the ground strap attached to that. But that's not the way it should be. When you removed the old one was the ground strap even attached? You should have had to remove an 8mm nut to disconnect it, and that nut was on one of the housing screws.

Please re-read my 1st post. It tells you where to hook up the ground wire.
