OVERDRIVE SOLENOID 200 1989

I have a 1989 240DL automatic. I am looking for the overdrive solenoid. It appears to be a small device on the driver's side of the transmission about 6 inches behind the shift linkage near the transmission label plate. I traced the white wire to get there. I hope it is in the same place on a 1986.

1. Can anyone verify that this is it? It is held on with two bolts. 1 inch in diameter, 2 inches tall.

2. Does anybody know if it is in the same place on an 1986 240DL automatic?

3. Does anybody know where I can find a picture of one? What the hole in the transmission looks like with the solenoid removed?

4. Are there transmission fluid channels coming to it that might clog? I believe that it just allows fluid to flow to the overdrive?

    1. Yes that is it.

    2. Yes it is in the same place

    3. No, but if you look around enough in the differen FAQ files between here and Bay 13 you may come up with one. As I recall it is two holes, I usually replace them when they are in the car so you cannot really see it. It has to have two holes to work.

    4. Yes there are the two holes that I mentioned in #3. You will want to clean it up real good with some brake spray cleaner and a rag, brush and best of all compressed air. Clean it up real good before you take it off of there. Often times when you take the old one off the larger O ring and sometimes the smaller one as well will stick to the trans. Make sure you get the old ones out of your way and go back together with new ones. You are right in that it simply allows fluid through it to the OD part of the trans.

I have had no luck with the crappy aftermarket OD solenoids in that past and I install only factory Volvos ones in my shop. They are not cheap, there is little mark up in them, but they work and they do not boomerang around and bite me in the ass.

    Good luck,

Thanks for the verification. The daughter's 86 is in San Diego and we will be bringing it up to the Seattle area soon. When I get down there I am going to try everything I can to get the OD working. Long trip otherwise.
The Volvo dealer there looked at it and told her she needed her transmission rebuilt, but I don't have great trust in the dealer from past experience. They replaced the solenoid, it didn't help, so they put the old one back in. I am going to hotwire it and see if it works and then go from there troubleshooting. I have several posts about the troubleshooting from previous inquiries. Going to be one loooooooong trip if I don't get it working.

If they stuffed in a good one and it did not fix the overdrive and everything else is working electrically then they are probably right on the money in that it needs a rebuilt trans to fix it up. Before I put a trans or a new solenoid in it I would by pass the old one first.

Remove it from the car, remove the inner smaller O ring, take a dremel tool and grind a passage from one hole to the next, clean up and reinstall with ONLY THE OUTER O RING INSTALLED and road test. It may take a little bit for it to start working again or it may never work again. Either way it beats spending money on a new solenoid to find out what the dealer has already told you and if it fixes it then just drive it home. With the by passed solenoid in there the trans will shift through the gears just like it always has you will just no longer have control over the OD. In other words it will not respond to the button, but if you need to drop it down a gear from OD it will do so in passing gear.
