How do I remove the clear backup lens without breaking it? 200 1986

I was backing up the other day and looking in the rearview mirror, I saw my reflection in the window of a store behind me. I noticed the driver's side looked dirty at the upper portion of the lens. When I got home, I turned the key to accessory and put the auto shifter into reverse and walked around an noticed that in fact it was not as "clean" looking compared to the other side. The entire rear assy is less than 2 years old including new back up lenses. I pulled the cover inside the trunk and remove the bulb and ran my finger around inside thinking there might be mildew or dirt causing this effect. I know that the back up lens is seperate from the rest of the rear lighting assy, but how do I remove the lens without breaking it so I can see the condition of the actual reflector to the back up light?

Thanks for your input and repsonses.

    Try this-

Remove the bulb holder of the backup light. That opens up a hole through which, with a little contortion, you can see into the bulb chamber. In fact, you can get an instrument in there.

Use a piece of coat hanger wire bent into an "L" shape. Bent the other end, too. Wrap a bit of paper towel around one end and see if you can wipe the reflector clean. Or try that with a paper towel bit on your fingertip.

Tail light water leaks are so much a pain that the thought of creating one by removing a lens is almost unthinkable.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

I don't know - never faced this job - but if I had it on my menu, I'd disconnect the electrical connections from the tail light assembly, then remove the whole assembly (lens and reflector combo) from the car. That way, I can deal with it on the workbench, in good light.
