Use the above link and it will give you a good summary of refrigerant recycling and service procedures. IF you get caught there can be hefty fines in the United States for venting refrigerants.
It is nasty stuff, especially if it has been contaminated and started breaking down, so let a professional remove it as the other folks have wisely advised. Good luck, rcs

if your going through all that trouble, consider upgrading to a rotary compressor like the 85 and up non turbo 240s. its been done by folks here. i did this a few weeks ago and its a great upgrade. it took me all day including driving to have a new low side hose made up. much better cooling in city traffic. much less power loss. much less vibration. less weight. junkyard parts and a few new parts cost around 120.00$ if you do yourself. good luck

I've just seen your earlier post about converting to a rotary compressor. I am thinking of doing this conversion for myself. If you don't mind, could you let me know what parts you needed from the boneyard, and also what other parts you might suggest. I am considering one of the alternate HC refrigerants, probably EnviroSafe, and am faced with needing a new compressor and clutch as it is. My '82 came with a York, which is not working, and was never converted to R134a.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

discharging A/C??? HOW? (recovering R12 and converting the system to R134a) 200

I also agree with the shop method. To the best of my knowledge, if you live inside the United States, it is unlawful to discharge R12 into the atmosphere. However, any AC shop will be thrilled to vaccum the R12 out of your system due to the high cost (and resale/recycling value) of R12.

After you get the R12 vacuumed out, replace the o-ring seals and Receiver-Dryer unit that are included in your new conversion kit (it's only $50 from Volvo, and worth every penny). Budget yourself part of a Saturday afternoon to accomplish this task and you should be in good shape. With the new O-rings and Dryer unit installed, have the system vacuumed down again and the R134a pumped in.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

Hey guys,
so what you are saying is:
if i have a car that uses r12 all i have to do is have them vaccum out the remaining r12, buy a 50 dollar kit from volvo. Install it, and the car can use 134? is it really that simple?

The kit for '91-93 might be $50, the kit for older cars is right at $200+ and includes a new evaporator, compressor oil (note if you have a york you will need more oil) filter/dryer, one hose, O-Rings and more bits and pieces that I don't recall just now. I bought a kit a couple of years ago for when I run out of R-12, it's very complete and well thought out, supposed to give equivilant cooling to a well charged R-12 system. I wouldn't call the change out simple but if you're familiar with how AC works and know what you are doing it should be easy.

Dave, thanks for the heads up! I wasn't aware the older 240 converion kits were that expensive. I've been looking at many of the new kits, and mostly for 700 series vehicles. It would be nice if we had a documented 240 A/C section in the FAQ (assuming someone reading this has already done the homework and has the part numbers).

God bless,
Fitz.

Yea, the older ones have all kinds of replacement parts, the later 240s used the upgraded evaporator and filter/drier and I think all that kit consists of is O-Rings, new drier and oil. 700s always had better parts and so they just need similar parts. I was going to doccument the change over but I haven't had the need to do the change yet.
Cheers

Best to have a shop do this so that you (1) do not hurt yourself and (2) are environmentally sound. They will credit you for R12 reclaimed.
