kick-down cable adjustment? 700 1990

I just purchased a 1990 760 turbo automatic with 177k. I have shifting issues.
It shifts late into 2nd and 3rd. It shifts alright if I let off the throttle at the appropriate times. It doesn't shift into 4th at all unless I let off the throttle. And it will only shift into overdrive if I am over about 63mph on the flat with rpms almost at 4k.

From what I have read in this forum, it sounds like a kick-down cable issue.
I read the FAQ on how to adjust it. It says to let the cable spring back so that you can hear it hit it's stop in the tranny. The cable seems to operate fine (doesn't seem "sticky"). However, I don't hear it hit it's stop. It seems like the crimp on the cable stops it before it gets there. I am thinking that I have to remove the crimp to allow the cable to go far enough in the sheath to hit it's stop.

This seems to important of a step to have omitted it from the adjustment instructions in the FAQ. So, I am thinking that I am missing something.
Will somebody please share their knowledge of how the crimp affects adjustment.

Thanks for your help.

When you install a new cable you set it up so that when you pull the cable out approximately 1 cm. and let it snap back you can hear the little wheel that it rides on snap against it's stop in the transmission. With it adjusted like this you tighten it down, recheck it, and then slide the little rubber dealy over the end of the cable sheath up by the throttle bobbin and then carefully crimp the sleeve onto the cable. Sometimes you will run into one where a knuckle head has either set the cable up wrong to start with and then crimped the sleeve or set it up right and then crimped the sleeve without putting the rubber in its place. Either way you end up with a mal adjusted cable/sleeve. If it is too tight it will shift late, if it is too loose you will shift too soon. I run into these often enought that I still stock the sleeve for the cable. I have never purchased these on the outside, I always order them through Volvo. If yours is in fact mal adjusted then order one up, CAREFULLY, cut the old one off, adjust the cable correctly, makes sure that the little rubber is in place on the end of the sheat, and then install your cable sleeve and be done with it.

I appologize for my ignorance because I am getting more and more confused. Here is my assumption with out having bought a new cable. I am guessing that the cable comes a predetermined length with the little dohiggies on each end. The cable rides inside a sleeve to protect it. The sleeve would in no way effect the operation of the cable unless it gets dirty inside. The little rubber boot seals of the end to prevent dirt from creating such a problem.
The adjustment is done by positioning the crimp on the cable in relation to the threaded metal "bobbin"(is that a creative name or is it really called that?).
You would adjust the bobbin toward the throttle spindle to create slack and away from the spindle to tighten. With my problem of shifting too late, I would want to adjust the bobbin away from the spindle to tighten.

Am I close?
