Fuel pump relay problem on 940 900 1993

Two weeks ago, I couldn't start it and the fuel pump relay was replaced. It ran fine until this morning when I tried to start it up. It seems to be doing the same thing as before - the engine just cranks and won't turn over. Is something burning up the fuel pump relay or should I be looking somewhere else?

Thanks.

Dave one more thing. This happened to me, look at the pins where the 900 1993

relay plugs in to the relay panel. You will need a flash light and a miror.Look in where it plugs in with the miror and make sure all female receptacles are in place because did the same as yours. The pin was arcing and would burn up my relays I had to lift up the panel and epoxy the receptacle back in place.

    Regards,

    Lane

Fuel pump relay problem on 940 900 1993

    Hi,
Had a problem with my wife's 93 940. Replaced the fuel pump relay with a new FCP Groton relay. I carried it for emergency on road situations. Problems persisted.

Not suspecting the new relay, it caused great frustration. Finally I tried a known working relay and all was solved.

The resoldered FCP Groton relay is now working and will hopefully serve its purpose next time.

This is not a put down for FCP Groton.....I highly recommend them, they are a top company to do business with.

    Take care,
    John H from Downunder

Along with the crank position sensor and possibly the FI relay, don’t rule out a repeat failure of the FP relay. A new FP relay failed on me after about 3-4 months. Testing the failed relay with a VOM found an interment open circuit (solder joint) while giving the ckt board a light twist.

Instructions for resoldering are in the FAQ.

I'm not sure if this model has the Rex-Regina injection system, but my 1990 740 has similar problems and it turned out to be the Radio Supression Relay. You may or may not have one in your car. But if you do, you have two of them and one controls the fan. So you can switch the relays as a test. Just a thought.

When my '93 940 had an intermittant starting problem, it was a defective crank position sensor. This is the sensor mounted back at the rear of the engine above the transmission bell housing. The sensor cable insulation had crumbled with age and heat allowing the wires inside to touch sometimes. Has this sensor been replaced on your 940? If not, it is surely due. See more in the FAQs.

This is not a hard repair. The sensor costs about $40US and can be replaced in a few minutes.
