I found your thread from December 25 '04 re. the electric fan conversion.
940 fan in an '89 240.

I'd like to do this but -
the pictures you posted aren't visible any more.
I'm guessing they hold the missing detail.

Can you repost the photos and/or give some detail on wiring?

I assume hot lead goes from battery or fuse panel to the 30 amp fuse you mentioned? How did you wire it?

High speed lead goes directly from fan to switch, and the switch is grounded?
No relay used?

You wrote that low speed is wired via A/C compressor clutch. Hmm?
Would I just wire directly to the existing terminal and lead at clutch?

    Hi again. Lets see, I'll try to answer these one at a time but I realize my writing is kind of confusing some times.
    Wiring is through the original 940 2 speed relay. The relay is switched on and off by grounding one of 2 wires (see diagram). One wire activates low speed, the other high speed. The relay is setup in such a way that highspeed can over ride low speed at any time. The 30 amp fuse is in between the + battery terminal and the relay. The switch I used is a standard temp swich (92 on, 87 off) mounted in a hose adaptor. The hose adaptor came from an 1980s Saab 900. In the saab it is mounted in the top hose but I mounted it in the lower hose. Do not reuse the Saab temp switch. It is probably very old and is set to go on at 115 degrees, off at 110.
    I thought I had low speed set to go on with the AC compressor clutch but I was wrong. It never really worked properly. I need another relay to get that working. So right now the switch in the hose only controls high speed on the fan. The fan only draws about 20 amps with a spike to 27 when starting.
    Ok here come the photos.

    This is Volvo's own diagram of the relay. I highly recomend you use it. Its a good piece.


    This is the temperature switch as mounted in my lower hose. I haven't had any problems with leaks.


    This is the fan with relay as I pulled them from the JY. Notice that the fan shroud is much wider on the 900 than the 200 radiator. You will have to cut off about 5" of shroud on the left side to make it fit on the 240 radiator. Note that 92+ 740/940/960/850 all use the same fan. That shoule make it easier to find one.


    A few more shots of the fan. I love having all the extra free room to work around the front of the engine. Makes getting to the Vbets and adjustable cam gear a lot easier. Getting rid of the clutch fan also made the interior much queiter although you can definitely tell when the electric fan kicks in. In normal driving, the fan only turn on when the car is standing still at a light for example. It usually cycles 25-30 seconds on, 1 minute off depending on ambient temp.

      Hey, thanks!
      That's a lot of information - should help a lot.
      I'll post here later after I get a chance to do this.
      (transferring the sway bars from my other car will come first, as I have all those parts already)

        That's IPD sway bars.
        They're now in my daily-ride '89 245 - a good improvement!

        Hopefully the fan conversion is next.
        Wife is noticing a drain on our funds from car maintenance.
