Repairing the front of a threaded hole 200

While doing some work, somehow the first 1-2 lines of thread in the front of a hole got mashed and wacky. 95% of the bolt hole is fine, and intact. The stock bolt doesn't go in all the way through the threaded area, maybe uses 60% of it, so to keep the same strength of bolt, we will just use a longer one in its place.

What is the proper method to clean the begining threads, without redoing the entire hole? Would you first use a ream to cut the bad threads out, then use a tap? How hard is it to "connect" with the good threads again with the tap, without starting a cross thread. This hole is not easily drill and fully retapped, so that is out of the question for now.

Pick up a thread cleaner or thread chaser, as we called them. Basically a device like a tap with a taper that allows the front to be inserted beyond the damaged threads. If the damage isn't too bad, the tip of the device will grab the threads deeper in the hole and pull the rest of the tool in. Got my set at Sears.

For now I would try and just run the Tap down the hole.
slightly turn the Tap counterclockwise until it feels like it dropped into the threads correctly then go clockwise. With a lite touch you will know if you are cross threading or not.

If you drill a bit larger in the front of the threads, i think you will be in more trouble.

What is the bolt holding in place? Are there other bolts holding part on or is this the only one?

If there are other bolts holding the part on I would just clean the treads up the best you can with the proper tap and leave it. The problem with reaming out the treads and attempting to re-tap is, There will not be any material to cut new treads.

The proper procedure would be to drill a bigger hole and re-tap it.

    Other option

Heli coil, this can be a serious PITA.

    Good luck!

This may apply depending on the location of the bolt. If the bolt hole goes all the way through, it may be possible to rethread from the back of the hole. I think I had this circumstance once.
