First - thanks so much for the pointers I have received on the problem - which was a stumble at turbo boost & sometimes shutdown at random on the highway.
FAQ's indicated quite a few things to check, but what worked may be something new. Anyway, I do not recall seeing it.
After spending over 500.00 at what I thought was the best independent I could find (with no fix for the stumble) I decided to try out the small Volvo dealer (YES, DEALER) in the small town of Anniston, AL near by. It is a real small dealership (Ron Newton Volvo) - 4 bays for the newer cars, and two bays for older models - like mine.
Kevin - the ace mechanic - first put the complete intake under pressure. He found a couple of bad gaskets at the BOV valve, and made new ones to fit. He adjusted the turbo boost which was way too high, and set the base idle. At that point the problem still persisted, and he had already spent two hours work time on it. Well, then he pulled the distributor, and it was bad. He brought it in and showed it to me. He said that a new one from the dealer was about 3 bills - but he had a used one that he could put on for 50.00. I wrote him the check for that. Total time spent - over three hours. Dealer bill for labor - two hours = 140.00.
This fixed it up. Man, I am one happy camper. It runs like a dream.
Oh - the bonus. For some reason the GAS GAUGE that was working off and on - is now WORKING !! Go figure ??

That great.
Now take a drive down south and help me fix both of mine.

Man, how far south do I have to go? I'm in Alabama.
What is yours doing? By the way - my gas gauge quit again ...but the car runs great!

Just to L.A. you know lower Alabama, Mobile. Its not that far from Talladega.
Where do I start?
The 90 744ti decided to have a water leak after a spirited high speed run. I am prepared to replace the water pump but am hoping for a reseal.
The 88 745 needs a front cam seal. The oil separator was some what clogged and the cam seal sprung a leak before I could fix it. So I am going to do a t-belt and what ever else needs to be replaced while I am in there.
So what time should I expect you?
BTW are you going to put your car on the track and test it out.

On the track? Oh - you mean at Dega!
Well - I snuk in (southern term for all the Yanks reading this) the last 500, but when I passed Jr. in turn three, he got mad - and I had to get off the track. I guess he has more friends in NASCAR than I do.
Man - you got just a neat 'lil laundry list - don't need me driving any further south. If you get in a real bind, I will get the jackleg that done some work on my 760 in Montgomery to come down, He will fix it up really good!

Yeah they don't like it when you pass em in a ferign car.
I don’t anticipate having any problems. I just feel as if I am working on one or both all of the time. It’s a mixed blessing being able to work on cars.

I’m glad you got the issue fixed. Seldom will you find an “ace” mechanic like that. Question, what type of failure did the distributor display? Runout, wobble, in-out movement? I.e. what would I look for in a bad distributor?

It had enough wobble in the shaft that it would touch the rectangular pickup in the base as it went around. When you would spin the shaft, you could hear it hitting. It was also advanced too far, I believe he said. I plan to call and ask more questions tomorrow - but something he said made me think that it had either been damaged in some way, or modified in some fashion.
I will ask further and give back a report.

I am humbled, Steve.
Does anyone know if there is a connection between replacing the bad distributor and the gas gauge? I thought maybe a ground. I just checked it, and it is still working! Amazing!
One thing I really appreciated about Kevin was he was really good - factoty trained and all - but he knew all about web sites like the Brickboard, Turbobricks ..etc. He said that he could always pick up something new that could help him in his work. Quite unlike my 500.00 mechanic.

Oh, well. The gauge quit again. Should have known that was too far fetched to have the dist replacement take care of that.
She sure is running good though!!
