Speedometer Gremlin 200 1989

The speedometer needle on one of our 89's blips when the engine starts and while car's just inching ahead while riding the brake. Sometimes it blips from at rest to 5-10 MPH and ometimes it blips all the way to 40!!! Needle always comes right back down. At slightly faster (.25MPH?) speed, needle wiggles just enough so you can see it waver. At 2 MPH and faster needle is steady and works just fine. Blips also occur in reverse gear!! Can envision, while car crawling ahead, differential ring-gear sender moving past MPH pick-up unit mounted on differential cover and this trickers blip. It's unnerving while crawing ahead at stop lights. What's happening here and what's the fix? 204K on this car.

Steve in Charlotte, NC 84 5-sp w/300k, 89 5-sp w/173k and 93-940 w/126k that needs engine.

    Dear Steve,

The first best answer would come from someone who has actually fixed this in their own vehicle. My reply includes no such personal experience.

However, there is a component on the circuit board of the speedo whose job it is to isolate or decouple the spikes and noise that normally accompany the power input to the speedo unit from the more sensitive circuitry used to count the pulses from the differential pickup. It is a large electrolytic capacitor.

The dashboard environment is unkind to electrolytic capacitors over time (heat) and the result is they dry out after umpteen years and no longer do the job of absorbing the little glitches. A good example is in the clock, where two such capacitors dry up, causing the clock to quit when it turns cold.

A good approach to your '89 would be to find another speedo and pop it into your cluster. I tend to rule out the lousy connector and flex wiring at the differential, as you say the needle pops up just by starting the car. And the traffic jam inching syndrome might be explained by the surge from the alternator when the brake lights are switched.

If the swap of the gauge is not convenient, there is a blurb in the 7/9 FAQs on replacing the power supply decoupling capacitor, though I think it addresses another symptom, perhaps in a Y-brand rather than a V-brand cluster.

Also it could be as simple as a bit of corrosion on the three-pin card edge connector used to bring power, ground and MPH sensor signal to the speedo. They tend to get loose once the anti-tamper retainer disappears.

    Best of luck,

Thank you for a very informative answer.

I've experienced clock-capacitor problem. It never stopped but ran slower with cold weather. Finally figured it was cold related and put clock in freezer with 12 volt supply. I'm not an electronic tech but knew enough about electrolitic capacitors to be suspicious. Bought replacements at Radio Shack for $3 and clock worked fine in freezer and so far the clock's worked another 5 years. Mentioned rerplacing clock capacitors once to a Volvo machanic who spent $250(?) his cost for a new clock from Volvo and watched his chin drop.

I have 2 spare k9800 speedo heads and didn't realize they are for station wagon until recently. Sedan uses k10000 something. Is there any way to convert 9800 to one for a sedan? Are noise capacitors the same? Wife driving sedan or I'd go pull speedo head and compare.

Just pulled spare 9800 head. It has 2 circuit boards with a pair of elecrolitics on each board. Assume problem on stepper motor side. Other circuit board must be mileage/service reminder side as it has every-5000-mile reset switch. One capacitor is larger and rated 220-6 (suspect it's supposed to be 220-16 (volt) but its clearly stamped 220-6. Large capacitor on other board is a 220-16) and the smaller one 47-16. Also read FAQ 700/900 where you have to pull needle and MPH face to access capacitors. 240 speedo circuit boards are in plain sight and both capacitors on each board can be replaced without even removing boards from the larger assembly. Still need to pull 10000 head from wifes car and make sure I'm buying correct capacitors. I'll let you know if blips gone. Still without digital camera or I'd attach pics.

      Thanks again. Steve

        Dear Steve,

The decoupling cap I am suspecting is the 47 microfarad, not the 220. The 220 looks to be a damper for the meter movement, certainly safe to use a 6V rated part here. Here are some notes I made:

I wouldn't hesitate to swap a wagon and sedan meter just to confirm the blip problem follows one or not.
