Info on pulling out Instrument Panel on a 91 Airbag 240 200

So I am going to pull out the instrument panel this weekend to do a Temp Board and odometer fix. What precautions do I need to know about the airbag before I take on this project? I know to unplug the negative battery cable, anything else I need to know? Thanks.

Someone on the 900 board recommended pulling the neg. cable and isolating it in a plastic bag for at least 5 minutes before starting.

The first time I pulled my inst. panel, I also pulled up my carpeting (driver's) and disconnected the orange plug to the crash sensor. Probably overkill, but I wanted to be safe and I think Haynes recommended it.

This is also a good time to replace any burnt or very old inst. panel bulbs!

Where is that orange cable under the carpeting, how much did you pull it up? I also want to be more safe then sorry, and also not having a airbag in the chest when pulling out the panel! thanks.

I'm doing this from memory but here goes...

        Disconnect battery first!

Remove side panel from console. Pull carpeting down towards floor. Pull back about 6 more inches from where floor flattens out. Look for cable with orange plug. Unplug!

The cable runs from the steering column by console then under carpet to under the driver's seat where the crash sensor is located. Easy.....

            Haynes 200

My Haynes was right except it also said yellow plug. I remember it being an orange plug.

The orange wire is the one. I've seen it in my steering column too.

There was also a nice little diagram on page 12-18 indicating approximate location. As I said, I found mine about 6 inches from the console.

None of these repair books (Bentley, Haynes etc.) is always right, just good guides....

BTW - Torn out pages from Haynes make a good fire starter :)

If you have the original Volvo stereo, you will need the code # to reset it after you rehook the battery. Otherwise will not play. Maybe needed only for cassette and not for a simple radio-only unit, but I can't promise that.

Sometimes it's written into the owner's manual by a thoughtful prev. owner or dealer. If not, get from dealer, but you'll need a cooperative dealer and the ser. # from the stereo.

Hope you have a nice aftermarket stereo instead - eliminates all that hassle.

I believe that security feature began with the '92 model year. Do you know otherwise, like from personal experience sort of kinda?
